Choosing a mulch type
Double-shredded hardwood knits together and stays put on slopes, and is the workhorse choice for most Central NJ properties. Dyed black or brown mulch holds color longest and gives the sharpest contrast against green plantings. Cedar resists insects and has a lighter natural tone. Leaf compost feeds the soil but breaks down fastest.

How often should mulch be replaced?
Most Central NJ properties need one fresh application per year, typically in spring. Beds in heavy shade or with fast-decomposing mulch may benefit from a light fall top-up.
How deep should mulch be?
Two to three inches. Deeper than that starves roots of oxygen and holds moisture against stems, which causes rot and invites pests.
Is dyed mulch safe for plants?
Yes. Quality dyed mulch uses iron-oxide or carbon-based colorants that are safe around plants and pets. It holds its color noticeably longer than natural hardwood.
Do you haul away the old mulch?
Usually it is not necessary — we cultivate the existing layer and top it off. If beds have built up beyond three inches from previous years, we remove the excess before installing fresh mulch.
